As kids, we learned the harsh truths about life as time unfolded. With many of us, it started with that uncle who promised us money and gifts but managed to keep of none it. Little by little we got used to the fact that some promises would not be kept.
During those moments, we would only be naturally be filled with hurt but we only grew to know better and laugh it all away.
The sad part about being exposed to this truth is that, promises broken by uncles or aunties did not only stop with relatives, it continued into adulthood. We are talking companies, firms and even the government making promises with no intention at all to keep them.
Some people believe promises are meant to be kept no matter what while others believe promises are only as good as the time it is made but are meant to be broken if there are benefits involved.
This disappointment that comes with these bitter experience, often times tend to rub off on us in many ways. At some point, we don’t care what we promise because others never even kept theirs to us in the first place. While some try to reel in comfort at the thought that they keep some, it key to note that a promise is a promise no matter what.
Below we are going to talk about how to make promises you INTEND to keep.
What is a promise?
Promise means a commitment you make because of something or someone to do something or not to do it.
Quite simple right? Well, there are types of promises and we are going to talk about most of them.
The first one on the list is solemn promises and this covers marriage vows, military oaths and conventions. They call it solemn promises because of the graveness and weight it carries between parties involved and outsiders. And many times, crossing promises like this incur consequences that the offender must undertake.
Aside from solemn promises, we have legal contracts and fairy tale promise.
As simple as it sounds there are numerous ideologies that surrounds it. Some people believe promises are meant to be kept no matter what while others believe promises are only as good as the time it is made but are meant to be broken if there are benefits involved.
As repelling as the latter sounds, many people follow that particular type of promise. Although, sometimes not intentionally, you actually break your promise (no matter how insignificant it seems to you) when you find something beneficial in its place. It might not be premeditated but it just happens.
Somethings you should know about promises
There are no small or big promises, just promises and they all deserve to be kept. Which is why you should not just say anything that pops into your mind. It is always better to be silent with your intentions and act on it when it is best for you.
Although we have grown to know that promises are not always kept, we still unconsciously rely on them when they are made no matter how absurd and impossible they sound. Even hating disappointing has no way of changing our minds completely when it comes to promises. Hell, it is the reason why we fall in love and stay in love.
One beautiful thing about promise is that, when you always keep it, it creates a reputation for you, not just in the eyes of others but for yourself. You become so oriented with keeping to your word that you are careful of what you say to others and when you make plans, you are confident you will meet up because of how faithful you have been before now.
Another beautiful thing is that it is impossible to separate promise from life because it revolves wonderfully around it.
Just imagine scientist and artists not making a commitment towards a particular project? The world will not be where it is now.
Why you should keep your promise?
If you look closely, you might discover that much of the pain that we suffer today stem from broken promises, be it wars, crime and injustice. If promises which were made, were kept by people, many things would have been avoided in the world today.
Promise keeping helps the world move forward. You may be surprised how much you may affect the world by keeping a promise, no matter insignificant it may seem to you.
While these are mentioned I want you to know there are infinite reasons why you should always keep your promises and one great one is that promise keeping brings peace and harmony. And honestly, in a world ravaged by wars, crime and injustice that is all we need.
If you believe there are more to be mentioned, please do so in the comment section and while you go about your activities today, remember we can change the world and we can do so, one promise at a time.
